Not everyone realizes that there is a trail created in your Search Engine Optimization, this trail is referred to as the 'footprint'.  The concept is quite simple actually, but the degree of possibilities of finding your footprint can be astounding.

First let's just understand what I mean by footprint by using an example.  Say you have 3 websites, and you created them specifically to create your own backward linking from one site to another. Well the foot print starts at the registration, in this example it is very easy to see a flury of interconnected links from these three websites and then go back just one level and also see that they are registered to the same person or company.  Simple, but the concept expands exponentially as the web grows; if your not careful.

Why should you care about this footprint?    It could mean loosing your site in the Search Engines, a lot of the methods that are taught across the Internet freely are dangerous.  And the job of a Search Engine is to give us the best possible results when we do a search, so they are always on the lookout for signals that let them know someone is spamming them with irrelevant information. 

To go back to our example, if your attempting to create authority to your website through backward linking, but all your links (although they may be many) all come from the same 2 or 3 sites that sets off a red flag.  And I guarentee the Search Engine is going to look into it to make sure it isn't all done to artificially inflate the importance of that webpage.

Caution Moving Forward in This Web of Search Engine Optimization 

So be aware, be very aware of companies that say they will 'automate' your backward linking, your article submissions and so on.  Ask questions about how are they going to make sure there is no footprint in their process.  Because why would you pay for a service that has the potential to get your site banned or downgraded in Search Engine rankings?
